We Are All Providers
Traditionally, the word “provider” has been associated with front-line clinicians such as physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. In reality it takes a diverse team of professionals, from the front desk staff, to the medical assistants, pharmacists, care coordinators, and doctors, to ensure patients receive excellent medical care. At Dock Health, we believe that each and every member of a healthcare team contributes to the holistic care of patients, and are therefore, providers.
While a clinician may interface directly with a patient either in an ambulatory, inpatient (or increasingly via telemedicine) setting, there is an often-not-so-delicate dance occurring behind the scenes to ensure all the tasks related to that encounter are completed. When a clinician prescribes a medication or places an order in the electronic health record (EHR), these tasks are captured and often documented.
However, the orchestra of “administrative” to-dos that result from that same visit are vast and require a team of healthcare providers working in concert. Currently, most of this is done over email, EHR inboxes, and Post-it Notes attached to computer screens; this results in tremendous inefficiency, lack of accountability, care delays, and resulting errors. There is no secure hub for the variety of providers to all have visibility and accountability for what needs to get done and work together to ensure it is completed.
The American Medical Association reports that 44% of physicians exhibit at least one symptom of burnout. This is an epidemic in the field of medicine. These “to-dos” related to patient care play an enormous role in the cognitive burden, administrative overload and resulting burnout of the entire healthcare team. It doesn’t have to be this way.
At Dock Health we believe a simple, actionable and team-oriented user tool is essential to help all providers optimally care for patients and themselves. You will see this philosophy reflected in our product, like renaming our care team “People” section to “Providers,” to align with our mission.
While the economics of healthcare have created silos of “providers” and, therefore, “non-providers”, at Dock we view all members of the teams to be equal contributors to getting healthcare done. Dock was built to get every member of the team, from the front desk staff to the attending physician together on the same page, bring structure where needed with a laser focus on provider experience with the quadruple aim (improving the health of populations, enhancing the patient experience of care, reducing the per capita cost of health care, and improving the work life of health care providers) in mind.
We hope you share our philosophy as we focus on this critical mission - delivering the best possible care to our patients and supporting our healthcare teams.
We are all providers.
